On March 27th 2009,  I posed as a security guard for roughly one hour in the Museum of Modern Art. During that time, both the patrons of the museum and the real museum guards themselves acknowledged me as an actual guard. The week before, I spent roughly 3 hours in the museum mapping out the routes of the security personnel and taking notes on their behavior. I duplicated the employee id-tag and lanyard from memory and cell phone photographs I had taken earlier. Combined with a carefully chosen red tie and a normal black suit, I fit in quite easily. The piece as a whole was a study in what constitutes an official identity. The performance was my attempt to manipulate the boundaries of the official art world in a way that was direct and immediate.
